Nike at 11-year low tonight, JOLTS at 10am, Doha talks — H1 ends here.

TUESDAY MARKET UPDATE

Last day of the first half. The Dow just crossed 52,000 for the first time. SpaceX is joining the Nasdaq-100 next week. Tesla is testing a car with no steering wheel. Gold is below $4,000 again. And tonight Nike reports from an 11-year low. H1 2026 was the most eventful half-year since 2020. H2 starts Thursday with payrolls.

🟩 | Dow hit record 52,183 — Alphabet +5% on Dow debut; Tesla +8.5% on Cybercab tests; S&P +1.15%.

🟥 | Gold back below $4,000 — fell to $3,986; worst quarter on record; down 14% in three months.

🟩 | SpaceX joins Nasdaq-100 July 7 — JPMorgan estimates $4.3B in passive inflows; shares +7.2% Monday.

Gold & Macro

GOLD'S WORST QUARTER ON RECORD

Gold at $3,986 this morning. Below $4,000 again. Down 14% this quarter — the steepest quarterly decline on record. Down 11% in June alone. Down 28% from January's all-time high. If you have gold in your retirement account, this is the worst three months in the metal's modern history.

HSBC warned the dollar's rally could become “explosive” if the Fed hints at tightening. The yen just hit a 40-year low. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for every buyer outside America. And the Dow at 52,000 means risk appetite is healthy — nobody needs a safe haven when stocks are making records.

Gold's only hope is a weak payrolls report Thursday that revives rate-cut expectations. Anything above 100K keeps the hike narrative alive and gold tests $3,800. The Doha talks today could add volatility — if Iran's “exclusive Hormuz management” stance breaks the deal, oil rebounds and gold catches a bid. But that's a geopolitical lottery ticket, not a thesis.

The Trade

DOW 52K. NIKE AT AN 11-YEAR LOW. PICK ONE

The Dow crossed 52,000 for the first time Monday. Alphabet surged 5% on its Dow debut. Tesla jumped 8.5% on Cybercab testing. SpaceX rose 7.2% on Nasdaq-100 inclusion. The S&P is on track for its strongest quarter since the post-pandemic recovery. The bull case looks bulletproof.

Then there's Nike. Down 24% this quarter. Trading at an 11-year low. JPMorgan just cut its target to $47. BofA expects 11 cents EPS on a 3% revenue decline. Tonight's report is the consumer economy's stress test. If Nike's numbers confirm that American consumers are pulling back on discretionary spending, the Dow at 52K is an AI story, not a broad recovery. BofA warned of a “three-wave correction through September.” RBC raised its year-end target to 8,150 but cautioned volatility ahead.

Micron finished H1 up 400% — its best half ever. The S&P's top 10 now includes a memory chipmaker. That alone tells you what kind of market this is.

What to watch

Today 10 a.m.: JOLTS + Consumer Confidence. Tonight: Nike Q4 earnings. Wednesday: ADP + ISM Manufacturing. Thursday: June nonfarm payrolls — the H2 kickoff.
