Chinese chip IPO +466%. Micron hammered. The moat is narrowing

TUESDAY MARKET UPDATE

The FOMC meeting starts today. Warsh decides tomorrow. Hike probability just jumped to 36% — the highest uncertainty this close to a decision in years. Microsoft and Meta report tomorrow, same day as the rate call. Apple reports Thursday. Gold fell to $4,030 on a surging dollar. A Chinese memory chip company debuted +466% in Shanghai and hammered every Western chip stock.

  • Gold fell to $4,030 — dollar at 4-week high; hike odds rising; the Iran pause couldn't overcome Fed uncertainty.
  • Hike odds jumped to 36% — up from 26% last week; September still at 80%; tariffs + oil giving Warsh ammunition.
  • CXMT debuted +466% in Shanghai — Chinese memory chip rival hammered MicronSanDiskWestern Digital; the chip trade has a new threat.

Gold & Macro

WARSH DECIDES TOMORROW. 36% SAY HIKE

Brass scale gold coins oil barrel balanced

Gold fell to $4,030 this morning. The dollar hit a 4-week high. Hike probability for tomorrow jumped to 36% — meaning one in three traders now thinks Warsh raises rates at this meeting. That's the highest pre-FOMC uncertainty since 2023. September hike odds are locked at 80%. The Iran pause should have helped gold — and it did, briefly. But the dollar is absorbing all the safe-haven flow instead. When the dollar wins the safety trade, gold loses.

The new 10-12.5% Section 301 tariffs are the complication. Warsh could look through them as a one-time price level adjustment, or he could cite them as evidence that inflation has structural drivers beyond oil. His press conference language tomorrow will tell you everything. Watch for “data dependent” (dovish lean), “vigilant” (neutral), or “prepared to act” (September hike locked).

The poll split perfectly: half expect $4,200 (if Warsh is dovish), half expect below $4,000 (if the ceasefire collapses). Nobody picked the middle. Tomorrow delivers the answer.

The Trade

CHINESE CHIP IPO +466%. WESTERN CHIPS HAMMERED

Semiconductor wafer gloved hands clean room

CXMT — ChangXin Memory Technologies — debuted on the Shanghai exchange and surged 466% on day one. It's a Chinese DRAM manufacturer and it just proved that China can compete in memory chips. Micron fell. SanDisk fell. Western Digital fell. SK Hynix fell. First Moonshot proved cheaper AI models. Now CXMT proves cheaper memory chips. The Western semiconductor moat is narrowing from both sides.

Microsoft reports tomorrow after the bell — consensus $4.24 EPS, $87.62B revenue. The stock is down 21% YTD and 31% below its 52-week high. Azure grew 40% last quarter. Options are pricing a 7.2% move — the biggest implied swing for MSFT in four quarters. Meta also reports tomorrow. Then Apple Thursday. Three Mag 7 names in 48 hours, bracketing the FOMC decision. The ninth, tenth, and eleventh AI earnings tests arrive tomorrow and Thursday.

What to watch:

TomorrowFOMC decision 2pm ET + Microsoft after close + Meta after close. ThursdayApple + GDP Q2 + jobless claims.

Nathan’s Take

“Moonshot. CXMT. Two Chinese companies in two weeks proved that AI models don't need as many chips and that China can make the memory ones anyway. Meanwhile the FOMC meets, oil is crashing, and three Mag 7 names report in 48 hours. Tomorrow isn't just another trading day. It's the day the second half begins”

Names to Know

CXMT, MICRON, PFIZER

CXMT (ChangXin Memory) — debuted +466% on Shanghai exchange; Chinese DRAM competitor proving domestic chip production is real; the moat just got narrower.

Micron $MU (▼ 5%) — hit by CXMT debut; China competition fears dragging the entire memory complex; still +250% YTD but momentum breaking.

Pfizer $PFE (▲ reports today) — pharma as the defensive rotation play; healthcare beating tech for the third straight week; the boring trade keeps working.

SanDisk $SNDK (▼ 8%) — hammered on CXMT debut; was +573% YTD before today; the China competition narrative is rewriting the memory sector in real time.

Meta $META (reports tomorrow) — AI-powered ad revenue is the metric; same day as FOMC; consensus expects 22% revenue growth; options pricing a 6% move.

The Macro Edge

  • | FOMC meeting starts today — 36% pricing a hike; 64% pricing hold; highest pre-FOMC uncertainty since 2023; decision tomorrow 2pm ET.
  • | Dollar at 4-week high — absorbing safe-haven flows that would normally go to gold; strong dollar + rate uncertainty = gold headwind.
  • | CXMT +466% IPO reshaping memory chip landscape — China proving domestic DRAM production viable; export controls losing effectiveness.
  • | US airstrikes still paused — Iran holding mutual ceasefire; talks via Oman continuing; oil stabilizing near $89 Brent after last week's crash.
  • | JMSFT down 21% YTD — 31% below 52-week high; options pricing a 7.2% post-earnings move; the biggest implied swing in four quarters.

FOMC tomorrow at 2pm. Microsoft after the bell. Meta after the bell. Apple Thursday. Tomorrow is the day. Be ready.
