Apple beat everything. Fell 6%. Only Microsoft survived earnings season

FRIDAY MARKET UPDATE

Apple beat every number and fell 6%. Amazon posted $62.6 billion in net income and guided weak. Microsoft held its 9% gain. The pattern is now clear: beat and hold if your AI is making money, beat and fall if it's costing money. Gold posted its first monthly gain in five months. And the US struck Iran again last night — the ceasefire lasted four days.

  • Apple −6% after hours despite beat — $2.02 EPS (+29% YoY), $109.4B revenue, but weak Q4 guidance on “supply constraints”.
  • Gold's first monthly gain in 5 months — +2% for July; $4,086 today; first green month since February.
  • US struck Iran again — fresh strikes last night; 4-day ceasefire dead; oil volatile; the war has no off switch.

Gold & Macro — This Week in Metals

Gold's first monthly gain since February. Up 2% for July while the Nasdaq whipsawed, Apple fell on a beat, and the Fed split 9-3. The metal survived FOMC week, fresh strikes, and three dissenters who wanted to hike. That's not a rally. That's resilience.

The Trade

APPLE BEAT AND FELL. THE PATTERN HAS A NAME

Apple: $2.02 EPS versus $1.89 expected. Revenue $109.4 billion. iPhone +22%. Mac crushed at $10.35 billion versus $8.74 expected. Gross margin hit 50.1% — a record. And the stock fell 6% after hours. Why? Weak Q4 guidance citing “supply constraints”. The market doesn't care what you earned. It cares what you're going to earn. Apple just told Wall Street the next quarter might be worse — and that was enough.

The pattern now has a name: beat-and-sell on guidance risk. Microsoft broke it because Azure guided UP (45% next quarter). Apple fell because it guided DOWNMeta fell because costs guided UP. The rule is simple: the market rewards accelerating guidance and punishes everything else, regardless of what you did last quarter. Amazon posted $62.6 billion in net income but guided Q3 operating income below consensus — and fell. Earnings season is over for the Mag 7.

The verdict: MSFT won. Everyone else lost.

What to watch:

AugustJackson Hole Aug 27-29 (Warsh's first speech). September 15-16: next FOMCNvidia reports late August. Iran escalation daily.

Nathan’s Take

“July taught us three things. One: AI spending is real but only Microsoft proved it pays off. Two: Warsh will fight inflation even if it means splitting his own committee. Three: gold survived it all and posted its first monthly gain in five months. August brings Jackson Hole and Nvidia. The summer isn't ending. It's reloading”

Names to Know

APPLE, AMAZON, NVIDIA

Apple $AAPL (▼ 6% AH) — $2.02 EPS beat, $109.4B revenue beat, iPhone +22%, Mac crushed; but weak Q4 guidance on supply constraints sank it.

Amazon $AMZN (▼ AH) — $62.6B net income; EPS $5.75; AWS “booming”; AI + chips at $25B annual run rate; but Q3 guidance below consensus.

Nvidia $NVDA (reports late August) — the final verdict on AI demand; MSFT's Azure acceleration needs Nvidia chips; if NVDA guides strong, the rout ends.

Mastercard $MA (▲ beat today) — consumer spending resilient despite tariffs; cross-border volumes strong; the payments duopoly is untouchable.

Shell $SHEL (reported today) — energy earnings benefiting from elevated oil; refining margins strong; war premium keeps flowing to upstream producers.

The Macro Edge

  • | US launched fresh strikes on Iran last night — ceasefire lasted only 4 days; fighting resumed after Tehran launched missiles at US troops in Jordan.
  • | September hike odds jumped to 63% — up from 56% pre-FOMC; 3 dissenters + no forward guidance = market pricing higher risk.
  • | Japan suspected intervention — dollar dropped sharply Friday; DXY fell 1% WoW; yen surged; gold benefited from weaker dollar.
  • | Gold +2% for July — first monthly gain since February; survived FOMC, 3 dissenters, $100 oil, fresh strikes, and Apple's selloff.
  • | 75% of S&P reporters beat EPS this season — but forward guidance is weakening across sectors; the market is trading the future, not the past.

July is done. Gold survived. Microsoft won. Warsh refused to blink. August brings Jackson Hole, Nvidia, and the September countdown. Thank you for reading every day this month. Have a good weekend.
